Feeding mussels ( to gold nuggets)

Post by pete »

Am trying to vary the diet of our gold nugget a bit to give him some meat in addition to his main diet of hikari wafers and corgette.
I presume the shelled ones from the fish counter that have been cooked are the best to use, are frozen ones OK too ?
I have read about feeding blood worm ect but the problem is that the other fish get it first before the gold nugget finds it even is I put it in after dark.

Hi.

I have been feeding my golden nugget and queen arabesque both frozen mussel and
prawn for about 12 months and it seems to be doing them no harm.I always make sure
that it is thoroughly cleaned and that there are no traces of shell and then i chop it up
before feeding it to them.I generally feed it once or twice a week, and if any is left
uneaten it is removed from the tank.Tankmates are Giant danios which eat just about
anything that comes their way, they go crazy for the mussel and prawn.

I wouldn't bother to pay extra for shelled mussels and clams, just split them open and drop them in on the halfshell. (they sink faster this way too!) The plecos are perfectly capable of rasping the meat out of them this way.

Remove the cleaned shells the following day.
