Cory Substrte

Just wondering what any of the experts out there think about corys and mixed substrate.
I currently have an empty cycling tank with some gravel which I think is a bit sharp for corys.
I am wanting to get some corys (or possibly some zebra loaches) and I am thinking what to do with the substrate.
One thought I had was adding a bowl of sand which I could move and take out for cleaning but would a 30cm circular patch of sand be sufficient?
Next step up might be going half sand / half gravel, would this be OK?
If I did go all sand is there anything else I should consider? Does grain size make much difference? Would something around 1mm be OK?
