Mystery cory at LFS? And spawning in quarantine!

EDIT: On 24 March I changed the title of this thread to reflect the fact that these corys, which I bought as unidentified corys, spawned while still in quarantine, only one week after purchase.

Hi all,

Can anybody ID these for me? It's a two-off (two individuals) in a mixed lot of corys.

Thanks, Eric

Corydoras diphyes.

Thanks. I was lucky to find two; they were housed in different tanks at opposite ends of the store, and had arrived in a giant shipment (at least a hundred) of "mixed corys." These were the only two in the group. They appear to be one male (the fuzzy photo) and one female (the clear photo) based on body girth and pelvic fin pointiness. They were only $4 USD each, so I ended up buying them (Curses! Impulse purchase again! LOL).

They are newly arrived at the LFS, and they are a bit malnourished from importing (their bellies look a little sunken). I'll post better pics later, after I have them settled in quarantine.

Thanks again. Cheers, Eric

Here's video of the two fish, while they were still at the LFS. Just got them home a little while ago and set them up in a quarantine tank (created using a new 5 gallon aquarium, with gravel, wood, plants, and a sponge filter all removed from a current aquarium).

The fish look pretty stressed in their new home, so I'll wait a few days before I take more photos and video.

Very cool to see that these are starting to be imported more regularly.

I have been breeding them for about six months now. Although I sold my adults I still have dozens of juveniles. They breed pretty easy.

I know that corys really like to swim in groups; I feel bad that there were only two in the shipment, but I'm glad they appear to be boy and girl. I'm not sure how well they will fare in my house, given how warm it gets in the summer. But there are solutions to that.

In regards to having only two, I know rmc has some extra for sale if I want them. But this also represents a challenge: I guess I'll just need to visit the LFS more often and keep checking their future shipments! :-)

Cheers, Eric

Okay, why can't all fish be this easy?!? My new have been home with me ONLY SEVEN DAYS! And, still in quarantine, they're spawning already! \:d/. That's a nice discovery before going to sleep! (Truth be told, I was warned they are prolific spawners, so this is not as surprising as it might have been. But I still didn't expect this so soon! :-) )

Yes this is correct. But if you don't like to buy fish via mail-order,* just wait a few months and I'll be bringing juvies to the Sacramento Aquarium Society meetings and selling there, or I can set some aside for you ;-), and you can pick them up in person. Your choice.

Cheers, Eric

* Sorry Rob, I'm not trying to steal your business. But naturalart and I live almost side-by-side. :-)

Thank Eric, not interested in cories these days. Just wondering which store you got them from? Congrats on the spawn even though it was serendipitous. :-BD

I see. I bought them at Tropical Haven in Modesto, about 40 miles south of me. That store will receive bulk shipments of "assorted" or "mixed" corys, as I mentioned in the first post in this thread. There can easily be six or more species in the groups, all sold for $3.99 USD each. If you want to go hunting for random corys, this is a fun way to do it, IF you can ID what you find. :-BD

Yeah he does, he told me so in another post.
Ok. I know he was downsizing his cory collection and I thought these were one of the ones on his downsize list. Maybe he hasn't gotten rid of them all yet.

My originals were his BAP to Milwaukee Aquarium Society. Since he submitted them, I have spawned that group and another MAS member has spawned the same group again.

They are readily available in the Milwaukee area if you know where to look.
