It is consider a norm for cories to gulp air from the surface of the water? I heard that they only do that when the water is dirty.

Yes, that's just part of their normal behavior. They are able to utilize atmospheric oxygen via their intestines.

yo polk,
actually silurus said it. It's their ability to utilize atmospheric oxygen by gulping air at the water surface.

Corys do this quite frequently not just when in polluted water. The oxygen is absorbed through the gut. Established corys often go to the surface when food is added. Do you do frequent gravel cleans as sediment in tank may be stagnent.

Glad to hear that they're safe! So they are not much of a competition for oxygen in the tank since they breathe atmospheric air?
