Found some Corydoras I want but they are not in healthy system(box store)- would 90 day aquarium

Post by Threecats »

I have been after Corydoras melanistius for awhile now and have not found any for tank companions for a single one. I was excited thinking I'd found some today but I think one is a Corydoras delphax and the other Corydoras ephippifer they hang out together in the store's tank. They look really healthy, they are active and their barbels are in good shape. So I figure they should be good companions for my Corydoras melanistius. However, they are at a box store that has probably has a conjoined filter system. These are not fish they typically stock they don't even have a proper label for them. Unfortunately, there are some cichlids in this system that clearly are not doing well (different tank) I could do a really long quarantine for them. Is there anything else I can do to mitigate the risk? Meds I could use? I think this is closest I am going to get to similar fish anytime soon. The two remain cories stay hidden all of the time and seem terrified of me. I want them to feel comfortable.

If you can quarantine the new fish in a separate tank for at least 4 - 6 weeks, and the fish are not ill during that time, then you should be safe. If the fish become sick at all during that time, the quarantine clock starts over and you wait another 4 - 6 weeks.

Cheers,
Eric

Hi I'm still learning cross forum link's ect but i would like to refer you to a topic i put in the loracariidae forum last week titled -questions and concerns re a possible pleco project some good advice required- for you to read. The difference is that the fish you've seen appear healthy but in the same system as ones that clearly aren't. I this was me I'd see if the shop could hold them if not you could buy them but I suggest if they held them or they couldn't and you brought them i would return to the shop regularly to see if anything transpires with them or the cichlids you may get an idea of what you need to treat if there's is disease. Also to consider is the fact they've not been labelled if you are sure what they actually are and getting them for a better price than you'd normally pay.
Thanks Teresa
