I have a 55 gallon aquarium with a ph of 6.5 and soft water (not sure what level but test strip last time I took it to be test said soft). I want to redo the tank. Its currently set up for temperate species and the population has thinned through the years and Its soon time to redo the tank. I love catfish. I've kept various species of common Cories, wood cats and abn's. If you were setting up a new tank, what would you want to keep?
I've got a few ideas already but theres got to be more out there then Cories & Pleco's.

Corydoras weitzmani
Corydoras robinae
Corydoras sterbai
Corydoras adolfoi
Corydoras pauciradiatus
Dekeyseria brachyura L-168
Hypancistrus sp. L-236

If you ask me I'll always say syno's first. But thats just me. You could also look into some of the asian catfish which are really cool, like some of the smaller members of the bagrid family. As it sounds like you're into Cory's maybe just a slide over to their distant cousins in the Doradid family might get you going. Lots of similar behaviors. And if you decide to slow thing down and not have lots of activity in your tank you could go for some of the smaller 'sedentary' pseudopimelodidea. Thats why I love catfish: so many different kinds. Good Luck!
