Syndontis Brichardi - Red Spots on belly

Post by Ambull »

Hi, I have a newly obtained Syno Brichardi in preemptive quarantine that i am looking to cut short because I am getting antsy and because the quarantine quarters are very ghetto since I have no free tanks to set up (he's in a 5 gallon plastic "critter tank" with an air stone at room temp (74 degrees)). Since I am being overly watchful of him, I have noticed two red spots near the pelvic fins on his belly. I almost feel silly asking about them because it appears that these spots are normal due to the fact that they seem pretty consistently sized and placed in relation to each other. Just thought i'd ask for opinions. Please see picture. Did the best I could having my wife take the picture upside down as i held the tank in the air. Thanks in advance.

Have a look at these and compare, I can not make out much on your pic.

I would get it out of the little tank soonest possible.

Wow, I really appreciate the comparative pics!

It looks like your guy pretty much has the same spots, though mine is a little bit more pronounced... though close enough to make me feel like it is normal.

I was monitoring the conditions in the 5 gal "critter tank" like ever 6 hours, and changing the water out 100% every 24 hours. There was never a hint of Ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrate in the water, but still, it couldn't have been comfortable for him in there.

He is now out of quarantine, and in my main tank. Thank you for your post!

I have kept these before and often had trouble settling them in they don't seem to be as hard as other
more robust syno cats ,

main thing is try to get them feeding !
live food may help till they get settled

Thanks! I have now had him in my main Amazonian tank for 12 days and he seems to be doing well. My concern for this original thread appears to have been nothing to be worried about. He is doing well, and is eating regular non-live food (pellets, etc.) but i do need to baby him a bit (put food down near his cave). He is very secretive still but i feel in a few months time he will be out and about a bit more.
