Peppermint fry deformaties.

Hi been breeding peppermints for a while, have until now left the fry in the breeding tank with only 10 - 20 fry generally making it. But now i move the cave to a fry saver i built out of a plastic container with air driven uplift to circulate water. The first batch i raised like this i didn't watch carefully and when it came to moving the fry out to the grow out tank i found half had kinks in their spines 
. Now the latest fry from the same pair are just up to eating stage and all look fine. Now given the wide range of causes of fry deformaties the question i have is if it is a genetic problem will the deformation be present from this early stage eg just finished egg sacks off or will it present itself further down the track eg 6 weeks old? Just want to start the process of elimination. Tanks have auto water change for two hours every day with 14% volume added through a carbon filter. All regular tests ph amonia nitrate snd nitrite come back great. No substrate in the fry saver.
