so i bought a small group of these, i'd never heard of them b4 but figured i would take a chance, they were small, and some had the long fin gene.

they are cool looking, they look a bit different than normal browns, but still really not sure what they are a result if the gene* is dom. sub. dom. or rec.
or even if it is a gene.

i figured why not worst case i breed them to my albino's and hopefully get long fin albinos.

long story short they are getting close to breeding size so hopefully i will figure these guys out a bit more.

i read the other posts with the naming of stuff thats why i posted up top about the gene, it may not even be a specific gene. and may just be a variation on normal browns.

They are a xanthic form of Ancistrus catfish. It is a mutation where fish lacks all pigments in the body except yellow so the pattern on the body and fins does not appear. Breeding these to an albino would (most likely) result in offspring that are all brown/black (i.e. regular brown bristlenose catfish) since albinism is a recessive gene and only results in albino fry if both parents exhibit albinism from the same genes. There was a discussion on this a couple of months back.

So your fry would be brown but carry the genes for xanthism and the genes for albinism but exhibit the traits for neither. Of course, cross mating these offspring together could result in interesting fry if you have the patience for it.
