upside down catfish won't eat.

Post by cade1014 »

Ok my upside down catfish wont eta he is housed with. 4 guppies 1 African dwarf frog 1 mystery snail 1 Cory catfish. And my upside down catfish will not eat. He won't eat algae wafers he won't eat flakes I try offering bloodworms won't eat that nor sun dried gammaurus. Should I try hand feeding. He has plenty of places to hide. He just stays underneath my filter. The tank size is 10 gallon. The water parameters were fine. The tank us heated to 76 degrees fahrenheit. I turn the light off to my tank when I feed him. He schools with my guppies and Cory catfish at night but I can never catch him eating.?!?!?!?

Hi Cade1014,

Besides the fact that you haven't seen your upside-down cat eat, what makes you think it's not eating? Is it getting skinny? Is it looking weak or lethargic?

I ask because I have an upside-down cat (also housed with a dwarf African frog, by coincidence); I've never seen my cat eat, but it's as fat as a sow! I feed the fishes and frog in this tank regular (Aqueon) flakes, NLS Thera A 1mm sinking pellets, live Tubifex worms, and spiruluna pellets for my albino bristlenoses. I don't know which of these foods my upside-down cat is eating, but it's definitely eating! :-)
Cheers, Eric

He actually seems to be a little plumped. I feed my cory cat. Algae wafers. Should I go to sinking pellets?. I also stick a little sun dried gammaurus in as well. I tried feeding him by hand a while ago. And he did it(ate from my hand). Thanks for the help.!

If your cat is plump, then it's probably eating well. :-) My Corys also nibble on algae wafers, but in reality they eat everything I feed them. So I'd suggest that if all your fish have nice full bellies (not hollow or sunken), then whatever you're feeding them is probably okay. As you get to know your fish better, then you can start to modify what you feed them, to specialize their foods.

I suggest investing in some quality, sinking meaty pellets, such as New Era Plec Pellets. My group of 11 Synodontis cf. nigriventris eat small New Era "Tropical Pellets" and broken pieces of 8mm "Plec Pellets" daily while I am still up. Every now and again, I add a small pinch of Hikari Cichild Gold Floating Baby Pellets just before my bedtime.

Just like most Synodontis spp., Corydoras spp. are not strict vegetarians, they should be both getting a mainly meaty diet, not algae wafers. ;)

10 gallon? For so a sum is probably some joke. What Synodontis is or Mystus leucophasis?
It's no wonder that he doesn't want the food, such fish is carnivorous. They should get meat frozen foods for fish. Or living e.g. earthworms.
