Does anyone know of a good natural looking (not that pure white sterile looking stuff) freshwater sand? I can't really find any good ones, except maybe some stuff from caribsea.

I've used simple "play sand," the sand for outdoor sandboxes such as can be purchased at hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowes. It works great for my Corys and also for my burrowing banjo cats. The only problem is that when purchased, it has fine particulates that can be sucked up into power filters when the banjos dig and disturb the sand. I solved that by rinsing and re-rinsing the sand until the fine particulates are mostly gone.

Most LFS carry a sandblast.

Sandblast? As in sand used for sandblasting? I'm not sure I know what you mean.

Yes, sandblasting sand. The supplier for my LFS carries Dolan. Most LFS suppliers should carry it or something similar. Ask your LFS.

Or try a pool supply store and purchase a bag of pool filter sand.

I use the stuff from carib sea and find it an excellent product. I use the black sand in all my tanks and find that is a stunning look. I only use about 1/2 inch so the catfish keep it stirred up enough to avoid "dead" spots

This sand is actually very close to sand naturally found on river beds, I believe it's reasonably priced too if you can get hold of some, as previously mentioned I use play sand got it from Argos think its only £3 for 15 kg and as long as you give it a good rinse is brilliant
