i get all my hand selected pieces from the local florist/interior decorating place. much cheaper than the lfs and none of them are cut for slate, i hate using any thing to weight down the wood. some of the mail order fish shippers also sell it in bulk boxes. and theres always ebay

I get mine from local bogs. I live in the twin cities of MN. There is a lot of city around here but there are a lot of parks and nature refuges around. I went to a park in North Minneapolis that has a "quaking bog" near it. I found a small stream that was narrowed before going down a small fall. I rolled up my sleeve and dug in the water and muck to find any wood that was brought there by the current and trapped there. I found some good pieces there that were already waterloged. I found some more at the edge of a small lake. Of course the actual bog had a few peices they were too difcult to get at. I would look anywhere some swamp and trees meet and look there. Also if you can find a true bog in a stand of cedars that would rock. The stores ask for rediculus amounts of $ for wood that someone just up and found. Its not like some artist made it. It wasn't grown for that purpose. All the wood is found. Just need to take some time and look in a few likely places. And don't be afraid to get wet. The best peices(and cleanest) will be completly submerged. Of course you still need to treat them. Good luck.
