Hey everyone,

I bought what I thought was a Nigriventris at my local pet store. It was labeled upside down cat, I asked them to double check the latin name for me, and they told me it was a Nigriventris. I had my doubts at the time, and I still doubt it.


I have him in a 50gallon tank. He's super active, but I'm afraid he's an Eupterus, which from what I've read can grow fairly large and can be a bit aggressive.

Your thoughts on identifying would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the help guys. Now I have to decide whether or not to keep this little guy since he won't stay so little after all. Ideally I wanted another Nigriventris to keep my first company.

Simply put: 2 synos is generally a bad number as one will dominate the other, this applies where they are different species or the same species (with a few exceptions, nigriventris being one of these).

A Nigriventris & eupterus is not a good mix really.

oh. hmm. I guess that's why the recommended number is three? So I should return the Eupterus and and try and find two more nigriventris.

The only issue is I like the Eupterus too

Nigriventris are fun and are ok alone or in a group of at least 3-4, IIRC. I'd recommend at least 5-6.

There is no "recommended" number for eupterus - they are solitary, territorial synos. Having 6+ usually "dilutes" aggression to a tolerable level but, of course, not in a 50 gal.
