Hi all,

Can you please confirm, or reject and share your opinion about this Panaque catfish species? It is supposed to be a L027 Panaque sp.'Xingu'.

And does this specimen looks healthy to you?

I think it is indeed a L027, but I'm not sure about the 'Xingu' colouring (lack of knowledge). I also think the animal looks healthy, but I like your thoughts.

Yes, it is , and it does look healthy. The eyes are sticking out (rather than sunken), fin membranes all look intact, body colour is consistent. The belly isn't visible, but considering the rest of the fish and also the visible parts of the aquarium, I'd assume it would be fine.

I see you have discus with your L 27. I'd love to set up a discus tank with royals, but I'm worried about the royals eating too much blackworms, etc, that would be fed to the discus. How do you keep royals from eating too much meaty foods? (Apologies for the tangent)

Hi there,

The tank in the pictures is not my tank. And to be honest, I have very little knowledge about discuss fish. What you could try in this situation is to feed the discuss when the lights are on, and maybe train them by feeding at the same spot every time. My cats (not the one in the picture) don't look for food as long as the lights are on. They become more active during the evening when half of the lights switch of. If you can plan your discuss feeding times accordingly, this might help.
In my tank my cory. sterbai do most of the cleaning of the meaty food before the bigger cats start moving around, although I don’t have tank mates that require lots of meaty food. Maybe you can consider them (or other cory.) since they are not influenced by the amount of light in their quest for food, at least in my experience.

I don't know if a Panaque species is a good tank mate for discuss since they create a lot off mess and appreciate some current, but I think there are more experienced people around who can help you with that question.
