Ameiurus nebulosus

Hey guys,

Last November-ish (is hard to remember exactly when I got them, life has been kinda crazy) I picked up a trio of

Brown Bullhead

from Zimmerman's. They started out as tiny little guys, about .5 - .75 inches. They are currently 2-3". One of them is quite the runt. They've been living off a mixed diet of NLS, which they were reluctant to take for quite some time (several months) and live blackworms. They also have no problem stripping the leaves off the plants in their tank if I don't feed them for a couple days! They even start to take an interest in the algae that appears sometimes on the driftwood and side of their tank.

I took a video of them at feeding time this past weekend and thought I would stop by and share. I wish I had thought to keep these cats sooner because they've become one of my favorites right quick.

Lovely. Thanks for sharing. Mine are very unfussy. Once well settled and a bit bigger, 5"+, I don't think they have ever refused anything offered to them and their great many tank mates. Very enthusiastic feeders, like yours

Interesting to learn they may go after plant matter.

The mottled body pattern suggests these are not nebulosus at all.

There was some discussion on this a couple/few months ago...the above is actually the southern mottled form of Ameiurus nebulosus. The mottled body pattern tells us that, if there were more distinct spots like in the first picture in the Cat-eLog here

Ameiurus serracanthus

then it would be that species.

Nothing This is no reproach. It's been on Birger's plate but it's not like he is slacking or doing this for a living. I, for one, have been waiting patiently. I only informed Richard B, the latest victim of the issue

Coloration is almost never a good trait to use for scientific level identification.

Around here our A. nebulosus are a darker shade of brown however as well.

Only A. nebulousus the southern variant. Still have a few in a murky 3000 gal outdoor pond... although they are probably almost in every body of water around here.

Hey, Birger, I maintain my usual disposition - don't let your hobby stress you out, otherwise, one day you will find another It's ok. Don't let it bother you even one bit.
