Looks like the wild eupterus I would see at the wholesaler.

The fish I am thinking of does have this shape to...eupterus, melanopterus, velifer, ansorgii all have the tall dorsal and deep body.

If it is definately wild caught my first thought was ansorgii, then perhaps serratus.

While i'm at work i've not got access to reference materials

My vote is for ansorgii, which is the closest among all the possibilities mentioned. Furthermore, the color pattern of the juveniles as described in Poll exactly describes this fish.

It is just like the ansorgii in Seegers book as well.

Very nice looking species! I can't see a reason why it won't be ansorgii.

I have this very old (possibly from 80's) syno which I have been calling cf. ansorgii but maybe it could be melanopterus instead? It has short filaments on dorsal fin but most of the time my Hemichromis elongatus destroy all filaments. I will try to get better photos but this one is not the easiest one to take photo of.

That's a cool syno! Neat how the tail filament extends out. Nice find! :-BD
