i have had a group of three Syno. multipuncatus for a year. i know that they form pecking orders, and the alpha can be rather mean to the omega catfish. my alpha makes the lowest one in the pecking order hide behind the heater at times.

a LFS has some 1.25"- 1.5" smaller juveniles that are half as expensive as bigger ones. i was thinking of getting 3 more of the fresh imported little ones. i'm assuming that the smaller juvies should fit into the pecking order without fatalities, but i'm not sure.

should i buy 3 juvies? if i buy 1 larger one, i would think that it would have a hard time fitting in at first. and the little ones are cute too. any advice?

This sounds about right as long as there is space for the extra fish and lots of hiding places all should settle in fine. I could be more reasuring if i knew how big your multipuncatus are and how how big the tank is?

I don't see any difficulties either.
we used to have a big group, wich we collected from several LFs over a long time. The fish in that shoal ranged from 4-8" and all ages, and were added one or two at the time. Once they started to breed, often we suddenly saw one or a few babies wich gradualy found their way in the group. In the end we ended up with 19 multipuncs!
