I know technically It's not fish related but didn't know where else to post this, my neighbour called it an apple plant but I can't find it anywhere so I'm guessing he's got it wrong x

Also the fish don't nibble at it.

Ah thankwmyou very much looks like a parva, which is great because they are a bit easier to maintain and aren't overly fussy about how or where they're grown x

I agree that it is a crypt of some type most likely but it looks too large to be C. parva.

C. parva is a very tiny plant.

I think it is Crypt. nevillii.

To me looks like a common sword just with the stem and leaf patterns. I'd guess echinodorus bleheri.

Hmmm... I just don't know, got 2 in the gravel and 1 in the pot with soil covered with stones, they both seem to be doing fine. What's the best plants to have do you think? Bearing in mind my tank is unheated with the average temp being 24C (22-26) I never knew there was so many! I would like some with a bit more leaf so they can hide and nibble (gold fish atm with 1 zebra I'm looking after for a friend until he gets a new tank although I can't see it happening so I may have to get 2 more as they like to be within a group) I was looking at getting a cat but as of yet I have no idea if it would be ok? X

Not likely an Echinodorus as these tend to have more rigid leaves and stems. If you had a good image of the crown you can really tell as Crypts and Swords have very different looking crowns/rhizomes.

Goldfish really enjoy eating plants so probably there aren't any really good choices.

Some people recommend the hard leafed varieties of Anubias or the very rapidly growing plants like hornwort or Anacharis in tanks with goldfish. In my experience they just eat them too.

Not sure what you mean by crown? They are just single stems with single leaves at the top. These are best I could get x

The crown is the division point where the roots and the stems separate.

Crypts will have a longer and thinner rhizome with fewer, thicker roots. Swords will have a very short or thick rhizome (if there is one at all) and many more, thinner roots.
