Yes, just a couple of kilometres. The dam was made in 1977. I'm guessing there were not detailed surveys undertaken at the time to establish what was there, so it's hard to say what was lost.

A large which got turned into lunch before I could photograph it, and an auchenipterid of about 8", which I couldn't catch (not even sure what it was, as I only saw it briefly). Other fish included Crenichla, Satanoperca, Colomesus, Leporinus, Characidium, misc tetras.

Nothing complicated. No diving gear, just snorkelling in shallow water (< 3 m) and catching them by hand or with a tarafa (cast net).

So what is the river like upstream from the dam?

Thank you for the graet pictures and sharing your trip with us. I have some questions about Hypancistrus sp. L 270. Could you please describe the habitat. How large are they and where do they live?

Don't know. We didn't go up there.

They were mostly pretty small, around 40 mm TL on average. The habitat is exactly as pictured in the underwater shots. The L270 were under the rocks or in cracks in between the rocks. Generally, the larger the rock the better the chance of finding something underneath.
