I think you're right. I think females are more triangle shape.

I went back to the same shop today, when I bought him there were two other plecs in the tank. They were marked as L66, but this one is very different. After looking at many L66 photos and the article of L66 Vs L333, I am sure this is L66.
I notice on the tank next to it that they had a sign that said L174 on it but and empty tank, could it possibly have been in the wrong tank when I bought it? After looking at some other L174 it is the closest I have seen so far. What do you think?

It is not a L174 Hypancistrus. They have smaller eyes, the tail is different and much bigger dots in their bodies. I have attached some pictures for your consideration.

Most of the L66 normally have smaller dots, than L400 and broken lines, very close to each other could also be a good indicator. The perfect dots on its head and the rest of the body indicates to me that it could be a normal L400. Although the L66 family does have a significant variation among them. Normally we have the tendency to say L66 if we can not match it with accuracy, me included. I've also seem some nice Lower Xingu hypancistrus, ID as L66.

In your case L66 are much cheaper than L400. The price you have paid could also be a good indication.
