Hello,

I have just decided to set up a fish tank and I need some advice. The fish tank is going to be a heavily planted 20 gallon tall tank with some small community fish in it. I remember when I was young (the last time I had a fish tank) I got a "common pleco" at the pet store and he was grumpy as anything but I loved that little sucker. Sadly now I'm older and doing research I realize the reason he was grumpy was probably because he was in a ten gallon tank at the time! I'd love to get another but I still feel a 20 gallon is too small for this. So here's my question. I am looking for a catfish that is small enough to keep in a 20 gallon for the entirety of it's entire life - preferably one that I can keep two of if not a small group (whatever it does best with.) I am also not looking for anything that will break the bank. I'm not expecting $2 feeder guppy prices but I'm not willing to pay $100 a fish either, at least not right now. Is there anything any of you would suggest that'd be good for this tank? Whatever you tell me I will look up extensively until I make the right choice and know what I am getting into. Thank you so much. PS whatever you suggest doesn't have to be South American either. I am open to all options here...

Yeah, sorry, I found out the hard way that if you can't post a link. However, if you go to the species search, select the family loricariidae and put in a min. size of 1mm and a max. size of 90mm then you will get the picture...

I would definitely suggest an Ancistrus; mine is very personable and friendly, and also very visible. He also keeps the tank clean, and is very hardy. They are also common in fish stores and fairly cheap.

Somewhere I've mentioned that this is a misfeature of the search... I wanted to have a "provide a link for this search result". But I guess it's my fault for not implementing this...
