Hi all, long time follower, first time poster in the excellent forum.

Need some help with an Id on a pair of plecs I bought. I think they are a male and female and they're about 2-3", they were labelled as L129 which at the time I didn't question. Only since comparing pics now they're settled I realised that they are probably not! So what are they? I've had a look and they're a bit similar to L387 but i'm not sure??

any help appreciated.

I think pic 8 from the L127 images is probably closest so far.

I forgot to mention the chap in the store said they were a wild catch from Columbia,

I've already posted this in the Loricariidae section, but thought it may get some more ideas here. Apologies for double post.

Wild caught from Columbia, sold as L129 about 2-3 inches long, had suggestions of L387, L127 and L147 but I'm not sure on any of them.

Yeah, no worries, just doing that now - it's merged rather than deleted just to keep a record of things... What you might want to do is ask the guys who were kind enough to reply why they think what they do rather than just look for more opinions.

Of course you may not have picked this up, but your feedback has been from two ichthyologists amongst others - so they should be able to expand. It looks like to me and these are in season at the moment. I say this because they are more elongate and show the reddish colours, I am not 100% sure though. I've yet to see this red but it might be the best body shape match.

I will second that about L127.. not even in young age (fry, juvies, young adults) have I seen this coloration.

Thanks Jools, appreciate your comments, i was in no way disregarding early opinions my apologies if it came across like that. Glad to hear some expert opinions that's what i hoped for when i joined this forum!

Just overall appearance really, nothing particularly scientific. However, I did completely forget about . I think this could be a better match based on body shape perhaps? Can't comment on colour though, as I've only seen these alive once, I think.

Just a thought, but the pelvic fins appear to sit further back on than ?

Thanks for all your replies, I agree the body shape does seem a better match to L127, though looking at the adult size of both L127 and L147 my fish still have some growing to do, so perhaps it'll become clearer when they grow.

Good spot on the pelvic fin position this would also suggest L127, but the colouration would lean towards L147.....

It'll be interesting to see how they develop.

Having bred L127 I am pretty certain these are not. They look very similar to some L 147 fry that were on aquabid last year.

I had a group of L147 that were very red in colour. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see what it looks like when it gets bigger, as they are among the fish my ex-wife gave away. But I do think these are L147. I doubt very much you can tell the sex until they are at the near 4" in size.
