Clarias from Thailand

Post by Stackdeck »

Picked up two of these today, supplier mentioned they were from Thailand, but nothing more specific. The rows of spots might suggest they are from the Clarias nieuhofii species complex? One of the fish seems vaguely more elongate compared to the other when scrutinised by my untrained eye. They are similarly sized at around 12cm TL.

On another note, you may notice the numerous scars on both fish, this was due to them being housed together prior to purchase, and even when momentarily sharing a small pail they will start to nip at each other. Would never have thought they were so intolerant of conspecifics.

Following are pics of the first animal -

Nice. I caught some similar ones in Borneo and wondered what they would be like to keep. I don't think they are because in that species the dorsal and anal fins are fused with the caudal, if I'm not mistaken. Wait until Silurus comes along with a better informed opinion!

With 93-95 dorsal-fin rays, these are indeed C. nieuhofii.

The median fins are usually fused with the caudal fin only at their bases, and are only completely fused only in some large individuals.

Thanks for the I.D, I'll try to get some better shots after they've settled down.
