Hi,
I have a C. Aeneus (albino) with a rather antisocial problem.. I first noticed because it was swimming with it's tail at a 45 degree angle, and releasing occasional bubbles. I looked into swim bladder disorders, and tried fasting for a day, then feeding cooked green peas. It swims at a level again now, but still farts occasionally.

I do weekly 30% water changes or more. I've also introduced another albino to keep it company (there are also 2 bronze & 2 peppered cories.) And it has started growing back barbels which were damaged by overlarge gravel. I am gradually removing the gravel, intending to replace with sand.

Is there anything else I can do?

Dreamcat I believe the antisocial behavior you speak of is normal Corys dash to the surface and take in a tiny air bubble occasionally and as the bubble progresses through the digestive system oxygen is absorbed and the excess is released as a bubble. I have 6 albino corys, 2 Julii's and 1 elegans and they "pass gas" all the time.

Thanks for the reassurance, however that suggests that the other 5 have something wrong!?

I had a cory (C. paleatus) once that farted extremely much, but it would also eat extremely much, i guess it had some eating disorder, cause it had no limits to its eating. With time it got extremely fat, it's tail started to bend up from the body, as if its spine bend up 30 degrees over the anus (don't remember the english word for this part of a fish).

It got so bloated that it had a hard time keeping contact with the substrate, so i ended up killing it of course.

All my cories fart ocationally, but it's not something i notice everyday, but this fish would fart every minute.

The behaviour you describe is quite normal it just depends on how often you are seeing this happen. corys will breath more air at the surface in HIGH temperatures, low oxygen conditions and polluted water. A full check of water perameters to make sure nothing ins at fault and increase the oxygen saturation of the water might help.
There are other situations that cause this behaviour but the above are the most commom.

Cories will surface breathe even in clean water, some more than others. It's perfectly normal and nothing to be worried about.

Given that my water parameters are reasonable, & that all the other fish are fine, I will rest assured, & chuckle rather than worry in future..
