Eureka! This fish is identical to my "squiggly angelicus" from an earlier posting. Does anybody out there have one? Mine was supposed to be S. ornatipinnis but clearly isn't. I think it's a Congo species more closely related to S. angelicus than S. schoutedeni.

We had one, bought as an S. ornatapinnis as well. This seems to be another one of those eastern European hybrids. There is a detailed write up on it in the latest Cat Chat, IIRC.

I have a young syno which looks like sp.5 i think from discussion they grow into adults that are like the fish shown in cat e-log as S.ornatipinnis.
The fish I have that looks like the adult sp.5 I think is aterimus.

It could well be my fish, which I think was a Congo import. Is the tail pointed or rounded? Can't tell from the picture. My cat has a pointed tail, unllike S. schoutedeni.
What's the 'aterrimus' in Sands's guide to Asian and African cats? I thought aterrimus was a little true inverting cat like S. nigriventris, with a black underside.
My cat is about 12cm long and has a strongly patterned underside. Nevertheless it often swims inverted.

Mine has a pointed tail, patterned underside and swims inverted quite a lot. Also about 12cm long, published info. i have gives max length of 11.5 cm, so not far off.

Synodontis serpentis did cross my mind as I looked tat the photo in Sand's book. The extremely rugose head kinda threw me off, though.

Is this something that could develop with age? Also, the pics I ID'ed as S. serpentis on PC are of a just slightly more elongate fish but its one of those that doesn't really show that when crammed up against a rock etc.

Rugosity in the skull roof could develop with age, although it usually happens only with fairly large species and not one the size of S. serpentis.
