Have a look at this beauty that Pier Aquatics in Wigan imported in. They donated it to Bolton Aquarium.

This is not the biggest out there, but it's still pretty impressive since it's a blue eye. It belongs to my friend Erlend Bertelsen, and it's a very cool fish with algae growing on it's odontodes :)

Both of the two 'blue eye' species, and , are rarely, if ever seen at that size (5-10cm). I've seen a couple of photos of ones quoted at 10cm-12cm, and the smallest I've seen in person was about 15cm. They are far more commonly encountered as large adults 30cm+.

Apparently, young ones are not encountered in the same area...? I hear that large Loricariidae species like these (and other big Panaque species too) migrate for breeding. I recently had a conversation with Daniel (username Acanthicus here at PC) about this, he did some interesting observations while he spent a longer time in South America.

The blue-eyes are from areas inflicted by guerilla warfare, maybe the young/small ones occur in an area that isn't visited by fishermen these days.

Has anyone ever encountered adult Panaques protecting eggs or young in the wild?

Nope, and it is a mystery. I've have collected 2cm -12cm Panaque at the riverside in upto waist deep water. The mystery (to me at least) is how they get there is the adults are spawning in deep water. The "common" Blue eyed plecos (P. cf. cochliodon from Honda) were commonly offered for sale at the "standard small panaque size" in the early to mid nineties.

I remember the 15 cm blue eyes in the mid-90's. I had one, and gave it away. We sold plenty of them back then, for like £50 per fish...But I never ever saw any under 10 cm. It must be due to collecting site. I don't suppose every Panaque migrates very far from their habitat to breed, but it does seem likely that they wander off somewhere to breed when the water is high in the rainy season. If they breed in deep, cloudy water, where fish aren't caught, this could possibly explain why we don't see the small ones. Just a theory.

It could be collecting site, but it might be collecting method. I don't know. I do know that at least Panaque nigrolineatus breeds all year round.

20+ years ago I bought a10cm TL specimen for £19.99. The were fairly often seen back then but you didn't see large specimens - perhaps this is indicative of different size fish inhabiting different areas ( although this is only a vague suggestion )

Interesting reading. The story about them living in a conflict area should be true. Perhaps that is why they have the huge price tag. Hopefully they will once again be in the trade as the old days.
