Hope something of this sort happens over here too,the poor fish has almost been hunted to extinction in south India.

Major: Now what's this... stone, stone, stone, (looks down at his hand) and scissors. Now. Scissors cut everything, don't they?
Sergeant: Not stone, sir.
Major: They're very good scissors!!

A friend was sampling the rivers around Pune (the type locality) and interacted with a few fishermen from there, none of the younger fishermen were able to recognise the fish from the pictures shown while the old timers recognised the fish but claimed they hadn't seen the fish in a long time or that the fish were very rare, I don't remember exactly. The scenario was the same in Karnataka too IFIRC. I don't know what the scene in Tamil Nadu is like yet.

I will be travelling to a known locality in south India later this week and hope to collect this magnificent fish to take a few pictures.

I wish you a safe trip. Green with envy as well, I've never seen a live Indian yarelli in the flesh before.

+1 on both accounts... not that Balaji's chances appear high...

Indeed, the best chance for me to encounter this fish will be an early morning trip to the fish market. My family is still getting used to being abandoned over the closest water body but this should be possible.
