Tatia intermedia w/ Geos

Here's a short video of my pair of Tatia intermedia wood cats, out and about on a feeding spree. I believe I have a pair and I'm considering placing them in a separate tank to try and spawn them.

Poor geos not having sand. The fish out for most of the video looked to be female.

Ditto for the Geos. Have you ever considered sand?

Afaics the fish that hides after some seconds is a male (I had to use a magnifying glass). And agreed on the female.

Tatia intermedia w/ Geos

I know bugger all about the catfish but you must give those Geos a change of substrate, please!! Put that stuff you have in there now on your drive. Get a bag or two of swimming pool filter sand and you'll see much happier Geo Pindare (I'm fairly sure they're Pindare). They feed naturally by sifting sand, and Pindare in particular take in a good mouthful then chew the stuff for sometimes minutes at a time before spitting it out. Its great to watch!
As well as this, your tank will look so much nicer :-)

If you're unsure and worried about the disturbance. Net out the stones and then, close to the bottom, net back in the washed wet sand. With a careful approach doing it this way, and whilst the tank is half drained for a big waterchange, you'll not have to move fish out and the disturbance in the water will be filtered and calm down in no time. It really isn't such a big job and if your tank layout makes it difficult, then just remove as much of the stones as you can.

Good luck with it all :-) and good luck with the possible pair.

Cheers

Yes, I have sand in my other tanks w/ my other geos. This is not a permanent situation.

Hi all,
As well as the sand issue, I'd be a little bit worried about keeping either the catfish or Geophagus with Tilapia buttikoferi (near the start on the extreme left and before the Severum appears?) long term.

If you were going to set up a breeding tank for the Tatia intermedia, there is an article about them <http://www.planetcatfish.com/shanesworl ... cle_id=423> and I would go for a tank with a sand substrate, lots and lots of cover (I like plants like Java moss, Java fern and floaters, but you could just use wood, structural dead leaves and lots of tubes).

Def. not G. sp. "Pindare". There are actually two species in there based on the vertical stripes. It appears to be G. sp. "Tapajos I/Redhead" and G. abalios. It really just depends on where they were collected. The redheads are pretty common anymore. The G. abalios usually come in under the G. surinamensis tag.

I love Tatia intermedia!

I do NOT keep African fish in ANY form. That striped fish is a rare form of severum aka Heros sp inridae. Also, there are no Pindare in that tank, but I do have a spawning pair w/ SAND in my 240. Those Geos are abalios and tapajos.
