New Member - Suggestions

Post by mikeyh »

Hi

Just wanted to introduce myself

I live in Birmingham - England and I am currently fishless cycling
a new 29 Gallon tank. I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions as to some nice corys to add to it.

I would like about 4 - would that be too many for this size aquarium ?

I have 2-3mm size gravel with several real plants and a few hiding places for them.

Any suggestions would be welcome

That would be too few. You can easily put in a dozen or so (or maybe more) in a tank that size.

Go to neptune aquatics or Erdington as they are good shops, stay away from j+d aquatics.

And get some sand!! Make sure you get the right sort, commonly known as river sand or play sand - you may have to do a little research or shopping around, but you need the stuff that has rounded edges, apparently cories and other cats (or loaches) can damage or even tear off their barbels when they are rummaging about. Make sure it's well washed too - this can take a while.

As for its' effectiveness? - I put a 5 lb bag in my 33 all down one end (to keep it away from the internal Fluval flter), and as I dropped in the first handful (!!) all 6 cories were right there, seemingly delighting in this 'gentle rain from heaven' - they have been all over it since, too - they actually bury their whole face in the sand - delightful!

I have to agree with Silurus, too - 4 is just too few - I have kept tanks for many years and was never aware until recently that they are so gregarious - I would never consider less than half-a-down now, and indeed I am thinking of getting a few pandas to go with the 6 bronzes I have. Good luck!

I went to Erdington last week and they had some nice, what looked like sterbai. Quite reasonably priced too.
