According to
http://www.planetcatfish.com/shanesworl ... ts+what%3F
it is a "omni-carnivore", so quite meaty food with a bit of vegetable thrown in.

Strange, but according to Ingo Siedel
http://www.backtonature.nu/pleco/fisk.php?NR=363
L257 is Herbivore.

Hi Funky Freddie Frog,They are most certainly vegetarian,I have kept them a few times they are more sensetive than some loricarids.
You only need to look at the dentition.
Ingo is correct .

In contrast to the website, Ingo's book actually says they are omnivorous. I agree with Neil that the teeth are a great clue and that these are delicate fish (high temp, high DO, specific feeding regime). He will of kept/sold a lot more of them than me!
In my opinion, they are not going to get into breeding condition on algae alone and, in my experience, in captivity smaller biofilm grazers (without the long gut of things like
) need more than just veggies from a nutritional standpoint. Several of this genus' close relatives are specialised insectivores. They may have evolved to that position through eating more and more aquatic bugs.

Yes Joolz is right ,They are what I would term a film feeder .They graze lots of algae and in the process eat whatever lives there in .Beautiful fish ..one of the prettiest loricarids .enjoy .
BUT dont take your eye off the ball they suffer if you are not disciplined with the water.

Just to be sure, in the Ingo Siedel's book "back to nature" is written that they are herbivore, not omnivore.
But I agree that they shouldn't be fed only vegitables.

Well, the (English edition, 2008) book I am looking at, p183 says in the section about diet, "these fishes should be fed both vegetable and animal foods". Which bit of text are you looking at Alex?
Cheers,

Jools, you are right you were looking on the description of the genus and I was looking the description of the P.tirgis on the p.184. It has a mark "H" that means Herbivore.
I agreed with you before that this species not highly specialied herbivore:) As far I understand Ingo specified P.tigris the same as for example Common Ancistrus. It is pity that to the same gradetion is places highly specialied herbivore and fish that should be fed on both vegetable and animal foods.
