Cory, looks like metae but isn't
Hi guys,
I found this lonely cory at the fish import market from Mexico city the other day (imports from Columbia). I have been going through all the profiles here but have not been successful. The fish is currently around 3 cms.
Can anybody help me please? Thanks!

Have a look at these two: Both very similar and variable.

Yes, you are right. I guess what I need to do is to see whether my cory has this 3rd rictal barbel. I will get the magnifying glass out!
I have another unidentified cory, which shows similarities to the septentrionalis. It would be great if it turns out that I have 2 of the same type, instead of 2 lonely ones.

Ok, it doesn't have the 3rd barbel so it must be septentrionalis. Thanks, Dark One!

Corydoras septentrionalis also have a third rictal barbel!Biulu wrote:Ok, it doesn't have the 3rd barbel so it must be septentrionalis. Thanks, Dark One!
From Identifying Corydoradinae Catfish
My thought is the fish is C. simulatus. The third rictal barbel is a characteristic that shares with three other species; , and .

Yes, simulatus and septentionalis have third rictal barbels. I too think it is closer to simulatus. Have another good look. The barbel is small and hard to spot.

Ok, I had a look again, but it is very difficult. Either he doesn't have the barbels forward or moves to the back of the tank.
If both have the 3rd barbel, then yes, it looks more like simulatus as mine doesn't have the black 'blotch' on the flank.

Hi,
as you've said it was imported from Colombia, this is another evidence for C. simulatus.
It looks also to me closer to C. simulatus. I would expect the barring in the caudal fin to disappear when it's fully grown.
Cheers,

Lieber Karsten,
Thank you.
The fish is currently around 35 - 40 mm, so pretty big already. All corydoras we get are imported from Columbia and I do not know which ones are bred in captivity or which ones are wild caught.
Thank you.

I would also say C. simulatus, this is a species where the females should reach around 3 1/4 inches body length.
