Panaque maccus male or female?
I am thinking female... just need to know for sure, and any hints on picking out a mate?

It's hard to say from these pictures, but males have REALLY hair back part of the body (it is very obvious!), and it doesn't look like yours has that.

it is about 2 1/2 inches

Then it is a female. As per what Mats said the males are quite hairy on their back half, especially at that size.araceae wrote:it is about 2 1/2 inches

I was going to say either immature or female.
BTW, top views are most helpful for sexing because then you can see the "hairy tail" the best.
