I would get rid of one of them, but how long have they been together?
How big are the fish, and how big is your tank?

Are you sure it's not a heater burn?

I've had almost the opposite. My Goldy pleco attacked my Gibby and wounded it's top fin. I seperated them and ended up having to give uo my albino Gibby :(

my tank is 4ft by 2ft by 2ft
the gibbiceps is 10" long and the syno is 8" long they have been together for 2 years
the gibbiceps has algea wafers and pellets etc
i watched the catfish attack each other.
the problem is my other tank contains a 2.5 ft eel and a 18" gibiceps and a syno notatus that is 12" so adding another catfish might be a bad idea the tank is 6ft by 2ft. i just worrying because i dont want them, to end up killing each other.

More hiding spaces might lessen the aggression issues, or even feeding at different ends of the tank. If you removed him after the squabble, you'll definitely want to redecorate and add more places to hide if you reintroduce him, to avoid more problems with the existing fish trying to drive him out of the space they "claimed" already. That at least gives him a level playing field.

Good luck!

It amazes me that they should decide to scrap after being together for so long. Have they fought in the past?
