Just saw some fish being sold as dwarf multipunctatus. Look identical from what I saw. Anyone got any info on them as they were cheaper than multis.
Def not Lucipinnis or polli. Nice fish but don't want to buy hybrids.

Just been told the Latin name is S. Multipunctatus but are recognised as dwarf species. If it is a dwarf shouldn't it be classified taxanomically differently? Really like the fish but would much prefer to know what I'm buying? Am I being passed off hybrids? Anyone heard of this dwarf myltipunc?

Sounds like some sort of either misunderstanding or intentional BS. Of course, the general rule is "if it can be explained by ignorance, it is unlikely to be a conspiracy", and it's quite easy to believe the seller isn't quite on top of the latest Synodontis papers...

Note that S. grandiops were described in 2006, so it's only 5 years. If you haven't got a book published in the last 4 yeara, it's unlikely to even mention that there are two species that are similar.

We work very hard to keep up to date with the latest names of species, and other websites aren't always up to date, and by the process of production being rather slow, books are almost always out of date when they are printed.

We could likely clear this up real fast with a good clear picture if possible.

For example I recently gave an ID for a Synodontis lucipinnis that was being called a multipunctatus http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/view ... 13&t=34159 lucipinnis often have "dwarf" tied in with them.

Def not those, these too gold with a multipunctatus spot coverage. Grandiops looks best bet still. Can't get photos now but can try next time I'm up. He gets them from Germany and could be just using a common name. He is a cichlid guy really and has some cats. Think he knows a bit as he has some nice S. Granulosa. Anyone know the rough goiing price for grandiops? They loom good and if they're smaller that's great

There shouldn't rerally be any difference in price between grandiops and multis (as they are mostly still mixed in the trade & offered as Multis by most people)

Price is a strange thing to try and indicate. I can go to a shop today and pay £20 each for small wild caught adults or i could go to another shop and pay £50 each for (ever-so slightly larger) individuals (not sure if t/b or w/c, presume w/c?)

I know a store that breeds grandiops in a display tank and sells the young for around £20 each.

The problem for many of these fish is that the hybrid issue has meant that many sources of stock are now shunned and more expensive wild caughts via wholesalers are the order of the day. I've seen some recently at £40 each which were bought at an unfortunate peak in pricing, beautiful fishes which had I not got my golden eyes would make a solid part of a breeding group mixed with cheaper tank bred fish..

Strange, the guy is calling these golden eyes. Is that a generic name for multipuncs? He says they are originally from Rene Kruter in Holland if that helps?

When I was on a major quest for goldeneyes I found a link to a photo at a Dutch supplier. They looked more like grandiops to me and seemed to be paler fish with a more outgoing nature.

One of mine seems to have a paler base colour but shares the spot pattern of the other fishes in the photos on the thread above. It shares the same characteristic of being rather more shy and less sociable than grandiops or multi. Whatever you decide, I'd advise getting a group so you can spawn from them without giving yourself a headache trying to track down additional specimens later..
