This may have been covered before but I couldnt find any info on this. Can anyone tell me what type of environment Panda Cory's are from? I.E. blackwater, Mountain streams, slow currents, fast currents, etc. Also if from blackwater environment does anyone think it would be benificial for spawning by introducing blackwater extract into the breeding tank? Thanks for any and all info

I believe C. panda are not blackwater fish, but come from faster-flowing clearwater streams.

Thanks , I was thinking that but wasnt positive. Glad I didnt add any blackwater extract. Now to just recreate a fast current for them to play in.

C. panda come from tributaries of the Rio Pachitea, part of the Rio Ucayali system, which are clear waters. They have a steady flow not turbulant or fast flowing.

You do not need to create fast moving water to induce spawning, these are one of the easiest of all Cory's to breed, once in condition all that is needed is a water change.

Thanks Ian. They have a gentle steady current so I am just going to leave it alone. My panda's bred pretty consistently in their smaller 10gal tank but nothing for since moving into their 30 gal tank. Guess they just arent in the mood yet. We all know that happens when the honeymoon is over, . Your website was very informative and has me wanting to get a few new species. May have to wait until after my move though. Thanks again.

Hello - as a relative cory newbie I would like to pose a question on topic in this thread. We saw some nice little pandas today at the lfs, and I am thinking about getting a few. I run an 'Amazon tank' about 35 USG, with blackwater and a fairly strong current (output from a Fluval 3 series), with a good amount of sand at one end for the corys to nose about in. I have 12 tetras in all, an SAE and 6 bronze corys. My query is as to whether the pandas and bronze will get along ( am assuming they will), whether another half-dozen is too big a load (maybe 4?). Also, in relation to the thread about mid-water corys, might some variety of these be a more prudent choice? Thank you for your input from here in Edmonton (where the Oilers have just drawn first blood in the nascent season woohoo!)

I acquired a batch of corys this
weekend with the black fin blob, and little masks.
I believe these are leucomelas, and the info
in the database says they are very common,
and come from blackwater.

Would these guys be suitable for a blackwater
tank, Ian?

The Planet Catfish database on leucomelas says
under *habitat* - "predominately blackwater."
