Hi all.

Congratulations are due to PC'er Milton Tan. I have just seen the announcement of his being awarded a special honor at the 2011 ASIH (American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists) meeting. The award, and his covered topic, is:
Best Student Poster Presentation
Milton Tan of Auburn University
Molecular Phylogenetics of Hypancistrus (Loricariidae: Siluriformes).

The poster had a phylogeny I have inferred from the cytochrome b gene in Hypancistrus species, primarily focusing on the Venezuelan species, but I did have samples of H. zebra, L66, L333, L260, L340, and L404 in there. For the full story, you will have to wait until publication, which I hope isn't too far off; I don't want people passing on these preliminary results. I have a few more samples which I need to sequence cyt b for, but mostly I will be focusing on sequencing other genes from the samples I already have.

I don't think so, but if people really want to see it I suppose I could post it after the paper gets accepted, which of course is a ways off.

There is more than one best student poster award at the ASIH meetings. Jeremy has earned the more prestigious Storer Award for Best Student Poster (a couple years in a row, including this year!). It has a much wider number of candidate entries as it covers all of Ichthyology (there is also one for Herpetology). On the other hand, I won Best Student poster for the Neotropical Ichthyological Association, which is a much smaller subset of the meeting. Not to diminish my accomplishment too much, but there was only a handful of people in the running for that award.

Well, all cyprinids actually, but what I do at the moment is more identification methods than phylogenetics.

I got a detail wrong but that doesn't change things.
Actually I have another friend, Dirk Belstadt doing similar work with Pterophyllum(wild Angelfish). Dirk lives and works in South Africa.
He is whiz with wild Angelfish and wild Discus.
It is great to know scientists who are working with groups I care about.
My favorites among th Cyprinids are those in the genus Boraboras spp.
They tend to only reach 3/4 to 1 inch so they are very well suited for the nano-tanks which have become popular.

Yes, I am keeping some B. maculatus at the moment, and I would thoroughly recommended them!

Surely you mean Boraras? I'll agree, they're quite nice.

Thank you for the correction.

Boraras species are almost all very cheap so one can set up a large school of them in smaller tanks and in larger groups they are especially attractive.
My favorite species has always been B. maculata. They are often retail for only about US$1.00 each. There are some others which are very beautiful but B. maculata remains a bargain and when they are kept properly a group of 50 in a 20 gal. long makes a beautiful display. I have attempted to breed them a few times but I haven't been successful yet but they are one of several species of fish I continue to try to breed over the years.
The SA Dwarf Cichlid, Dicrossus filamentosus, is another species I still try to breed over the years. I never fail to spawn them but if the female doesn't provide brood care the number of fry I have raised artificially is only about 5. A good brooding female can easily yield a brood of 60 to 80 fry. I have two pairs set up presently and am hoping at least one results in success.
