These were both labeled Synodontis Petricola Burundi. They don't look alike and they don't look like my fish. Are they petricola?

I think the closest you will get with the first is S.petricola.

The second is sorta odd...a S.polli but the spots are merging together alot.
Maybe close to this

Regarding the polli, my fish does have the dull white leading edge to the dorsal described for polli though you can't see it in the pic. And it does have a very wide head. Seems to fit. I looked through all the pics on polli including cf1 and cf2. In person my fish looks most like this.

If the price was fair for petricola, would you pay more, less or the same for polli? Trying to decide what to do with him.

Thanks for all your help!

Just to help fill in the blanks...what are the lengths of these fish at the moment?

The "petricola" is 4" and the "polli" is 5" or about that.

I'm trying to figure out if I should complain to the LFS for charging me the same for a mis-labeled polli or if the value of a polli is higher.

Then I will still be searching for more petricola and more polli apparently, LOL.

You can probably complain to the shop, but I expect the answer will be "Well, that's what it came in as, and we paid X for it, so we have to sell it at Y. Or something to that extent.

There are no set prices for fish, so the same species can vary by at least 50% between one shop and another, depending on the distribution chain, quality of the fish, when the fish was bought, and another half a dozen factors.

This particular S.polli is also at 5 inches already bigger than what I consider as my regular polli...so to find some the same may not happen, hard to say.

It is hard for me to put a value on it for you, nice to have something different, but it may end up as a single fish for you.

Or I could just take it back as a mis-labeled fish and get a refund. Decisions, decisions.

The more i look at the first pic the more i think not petricola, more irsacae/tanganyicae complex due to the elongated head and underslung mouth

Yes his mouth/head did look different from my fish.

I can see what your saying...what is interesting going with that theory is the light colored first ray of the dorsal.
