I believe that it becomes pretty obvious by the bristles on the gill covers.
Big bristles = male
small/non existent = female
I am no biologist though :))

This is most likely a male, judging by the gill-spines.
Spines on the pectoral fins are also larger on males than females.

Both sex get long cheek odontodes, females get a little smaller on the pectoral fins. I would go for the shape of body, lenght of snout and the shape of the anal fins, if they are in good condition and you have both sexes you would be able to see the differencies in the overall shape. Males longer snout (make them looking more slender), larger anal fins, much longer and thicker odontodes on the pectoral fins.
