Spawning of Loricaria simillima
I have identified the parents of the phantom Whiptail spawning as Loricaria simillima.
The eggs are now over one week old and have stopped getting fungus on them, you can clearly see the embryo young, one has hatched and the rest don’t look to far away.

Fingers crossed for a few fry soon.
I would be grateful to any one with tips for raising the fry.
I was thinking along the lines of keeping them in the breeding trap and target feeding ground flake and frozen Red Plankton?

Strange thing is they hatch over a 24 to 48 hour time span and have very small eggs sacks that are used up over a 12 hour time span.

I suspect this is due to them having very little food in the area were they normally hatch?

I am going to feed fine ground vegetable flake with some high protein flake ground the same

Bob,

With mine, I used finely ground tetra prima, fed twice a day once yolk sac gone. I also added cherry shrimps to the holding tank within a tank to eat leftovers. Overfeeding will kill them. Got onto frozen brineshrimp in a couple of weeks and could release them into sandy tank once they reach 2cm TL.

Thanks I will track down some cherry Shrimps.

I have a spray bar feeding the breeding trap
I was thinking of diverting the flow when I feed so they get a chance to eat ? what do you think?
I also am interested if the diet is more veg or meat based in the wild.
How many times a day would you feed them?

Regards Bob

Bob,

If it weren't the winter I'd send you some shrimp - I have one or two spare! I used a strong airstone in a 12x6" nursery with a water depth of 4-5". Reckon spraybar good if it goes straight down from above the water. Angle would introduce more current than you want. They're omnivores leaning toward meat IME. I fed twice daily. Daily once released into main tank.

Wild diet is variable, you may wish to digest this: http://www.scribd.com/doc/26855999/Lori ... ing-Review

A Pun? :d
i am going away to SEA for 3 weeks in early march what do you think i should do ? I am guessing they will be able to be left in a tank and feed every few days?

A pun, me? Surely not. :-)

Yeah, first time I saw fry was after I'd been away, so they'll do fine in a mature tank. You could add live Daphnia before you go, assuming nothing else in tank, they'll gradually feed the whips without rotting.

Hi all,
Bob if the other Bristolian Pleco god can't provide any, I've got cherry shrimps you can have from the tank in the lab. I can just drop them over to the mean streets of Bristol after work. I've got some of my new "celebrity endorsed floating wood plec caves" I need to drop of in Bristol as well.

cheers Darrel
