Hi can anyone i.d this pleco got them from lfs had them mixed in with large bulldog plecs and baby bristlesnose and few other types.

Only babies as you can see from the pic of one near medium otto lol

its pattern is like a peppered cory cat

A Parotocinclus species??

Pretty sure you will find its a LDA25 and a common name for LDA25 is a pitbull.

Common names are a pain different areas different names,
In the west they can be seen as both

Jeez, could this be any more confusing?

Might be helpful in future to maybe mention that these are all common names for the same fish that it was already identified as?
The common names are available in the cat-elog page I linked to.

If DazSH wasn't aware, he might of thought that this was some alternative ID for an undescribed species.

Could be more confusing yes. I just read the first post and made my ID like i always do, i dont see a problem. More than 1 ID is often needed and more than often justified. Maybe now i have answered this you can move on past this stage.

Yes, of course, and common names are fine, but mentioning that your ID was actually in agreement with mine is a good idea.

The OP may have looked at your post, wondered who was actually correct, searched the site for "LDA25", then wound up at the same cat-elog page.

The general custom here is that if someone posts positively with the right (in your view) ID, then it's a bit "showy" to add anything. I mean, there are likely 30 - 50 others who have looked and gone, OK, that's cool, and then any additional poster is essentially showing off they know too. Unnecessary and in this case hugely confusing. When a species is described, it's also best to use clog tags to the latin name as Racoll did. Then any code numbers and common names are pretty useless but are OK if, again, in clog tags. This behaviour can be picked up by lurking.

There is an unofficial pride taken in responding, accurately, as fast as possible, and due to the international nature of this forum, that means that often someone, in some timezone somewhere, is watching. Hence one of the reasons for the popularity of the forum. Repeated "me too" posts disrupt this as they bump already ID'ed fish back to the top of the pile.

Now, if someone posts "I think it's whatever species but I'm not sure" then it's cool to firm that up affirmatively. It's also good to post a different ID with reasons why at any point.

An interesting aside, the name pitbull pleco came about as the fish was introduced to the English speaking audience by the Erwin Schraml, Erwin got the translation from German wrong. He meant to call it bulldog unaware that this was the UK common name for at the time(in the US at the time the common name was rubbernose) and called it pitbull. Oddly the name didn't stick in Germany, there it is Goby Pleco but this itself was muddied when this species got described as which is likely not its settled resting place.

I am trying to be helpful, why the sarcasm? I was only trying to help to explain why your posts were seen as poor form as I am sure you would not intentionality want to cause trouble. Thanks for the explaination. I put my thoughts in a post as to the ID of the fish, as i will continue to do if i "think" i recognise the fish. I personally dont care who answered first and think that the majority of people would prefer a couple of posts directed at the same fish to confirm the ID. But as i am now bored of this thread i will leave you with this.. Its a pitbull.

This site does exist however for people other than yourself and, again I hope I am asking nicely, it would be great if you could show a little more courtesy to the folks who offer their own free time to run and contribute meaningfully to it. The contempt shown by you in this thread is not very welcome.

I think you are reading whatever you want instead of what im typing. Well knock yourself out. But its not what i typed nor is it the way i typed it. If there is a post from someone searching for an id for a fish and i know that id then i will help out. If you are saying thats not an available option for me then by all means delete my account because i never signed up to argue with someone.
