Glyptothorax Gut Content Analysis

Has this ever been done??? Question asked to find out if there are other commonly available items I can fed 'em beside blood worms and tubifex as their availability might come down in the summer here. Earthworms I guess could be an option.

FBS seems to work rather poorly on 'em from my experience. The G.indicus I have currently kept losing weight rapidly when fed exclusively on FBS.

There have been a couple of studies for the Sundaic Southeast Asian species (G. platypogon, maybe also G. plectilis) published in obscure Indonesian journal, and these might be the only ones I know of, IIRC.

Off the top of my head: you might want to try aquatic insect larvae (I think something like stonefly or mayfly larvae would be ideal, small odonate larvae might work in a pinch), possibly cladocerans.

Thanks HH. Im guessing there s very little scope of retrieving the literature you mentioned.

So insect larvae primarily. Will aim at starting a harvest for the same and keep this thread updated as and when something happens.

Most fish won't refuse an earthworm. I would give these a go.

Doesn't Glyptothorax accept replacement food?

I have kept 6 species so far and none of 'em seemed to too bothered by the sight of processed food in front of 'em as is the case with most Sisorids.

I have read of 'em accepting processed food in a few instances but I am happier giving 'em what exactly they need. I get ugly stares from the other side of the tank for feeding FBS as it is.

HI Balaji

Have you tried newly hatched brine shrimp?

I don't advise feeding this regualary, BTW, I am of the opinion that if brine shrimp naupalii is fed every day or so it constipates the fish; but, I find that most of my sisorids like the stuff.

Hey Adrian,

Nope. Haven tried freshly hatched brine shrimp but will they suit a 7" fish. I would imagine their size is perfect for the smaller Sisorids.

HI Balaji

Slightly puzzled now, you say your is 7 inches in length.
I wasn't aware that they grew to that size, I thought that they were more likely to max out at around 4" SL.
Thats why I suggested giving them baby brine shrimp, my G telchitta used to relish a small feeding of them.
Or was you just asking the question about feeding Glyptothorax species in General?

Hey Adrian,

Question was aimed at looking at other feasible sources of food for all Glyptothorax species but since G.indicus is the only one I am keeping at the moment, was referring to him. And no, they do grow more than 4" for sure.

Ps : Im referring to sizes in TL.

My G. indicus love earthworms. They also eat shrimp mix and FBS, I think you can still feed them FBS after soaking them in Selcon or something similar.
