I agree with this. It is far too easy to get into a bad situation when someone says "I'll pay £15" for something the seller wants £50 for... Some idea of price is much better for everyone inolved.

I can see that point but we all know what stuff is worth
on the list today was L260 @£90 and L174 @£100 from reputable importers.
I am selling to make space so to me offers is the best way
it also works in reverse I say £20 every one thinks they are worth £10 and no one buys them.

If i say £10 and some one says yes then some one saysIi will give you £20 am I not a bum to take the £20?
When i sell fry i set a price but these are mature fish and mostly breeding groups people will pay what they want for a group.

So it is offers

Right, it's obviously your decision - I'm speaking as an individual, not in my role as a moderator. But I prefer to see a price - that way, I can easily determine if the price is what I'd be happy to pay - prices vary dramatically from one place to another. I've seen 2-2.5" L128 @ £55 and 4"+ L128 @£28 in the last few weeks. That's quite a difference. And if you have fish that are 3" or so, and need about £40, I certainly wouldn't be interested... (This is hypothetical, I don't think I'm after any new fish at the moment - pretty well stocked full at the moment...)

Problem is Bob the L173 might not be L173 from what i read. A lot of people say L173 and then a lot of people say L400 so no-one will pay £200 for a L400. And you yourself have said you think your fish may be a hybrid between both species, which in my eyes makes them unsaleable.

As listed and offers.
the onlt reason I put a price was to assist people.
As I have always said offers.
offer me more offer me less.

As the fish are for collection I ask for no money before and any one who is not happy will not have to pay.
I fail to see the problem?

We try not to delete any posts as then other folks can't see where something went wrong and avoid the same thing happening - that's not just for sale things, it's across the whole forum. You are free to offer fish for sale as you wish, really the only restriction is on illegal things.

However, without pics, you are likely to be spending a lot of time at the keyboard. If you're fine with that then so are we.

Please note I am becoming some what disappointed
I have clearly stated these fish are L173/ L400
The reason is because I have had several people who own L173 say they are the same as the fish they own and several people who own L400 have said they are the same as the fish they own.
I also clearly state that the fish are for collection and I clearly state that if any one is not happy with the description on inspection they are not obliged to buy them.
As your aware several web sites are debating this fish and several people are selling this type of fish as L173.
I was under the impression that this section of the forum was for listing fish for sale.
Debates on id are surly reserved for outer sections of this forum.

Dunno what all the "Please note I am becoming some what disappointed" is all about. But when you place a "rough" price tag of £200 on a fish that could just as easily be L400 and worth a hell of a lot less then this is unfair on someone who may not know much about them, imagine if you paid £2000 for a group of 10 L400 how would you feel. Its kind of like saying "Heres a picture, Its signed its worth £200"... but if it isnt what it appears then its not worth that whatsoever. Please note i am the one becoming some what disappointed now.

Suggest there's no need to shout. If you're going to post here, you are opening yourself to questions - the potential buyer will judge their view of entering into a transaction based on responses etc. I know that's obvious, but that's how these things work here too.

Meantime, all this could likely be cleared up by a picture. Youngsters are really hard to tell apart, but adults are easier. If I can help then I will, I have, I think, both l-numbers at home too. Might also spurn me on to revise the pictures online here as I know they need some work too (but not those two L-numbers).

As to the pricing thing, I don't think that's really a very valid point as they're worth what someone wants to pay for them.

Hi

Jools they were not question but baiting by a member who has a record of doing this sort of thing. On other sites.
I decided as stated to remove the listing and re-submit once I had revised it.

I was under the impression from previous posts that comments on value or quality were not allowed in a sales forum. But only relevant comments should the Mods feel that the comments passed were constructive then I am some what disturbed by this.

On the subject of photos I found it impossible to post the photos I had due to a problem with my Photo bucket account
The general impression I got was that certain members felt I was selling l400 as L173 I did point out that this fish was not identified as either to my satisfaction and that is why i invited offers and also offered inspection.
Please can we now let this matter drop?

In all I feel that several people myself included have allowed this post to become a baiting match. For this i do apologises I am sure other will.

Sure, happy to let it drop, I don't think any apology is needed. BTW, photobucket is immaterial, you can post image files directly by attaching them to your post. Let the team know if we can help with that - maybe posting them in the ID forum is a good idea. You might get a but more than the useless (it is this, I am sure) post and something more like, I think it is this becuase X, Y and Z.

For the wider record, price is rather arbitrary but ID discussions are encouraged. It might have prevented, to give a recent example where quality in the sense that Synodontis hybrids were being offered for sale. So, comments on value or quality are not discouraged but often the former are rather useless. I mean, there are a lot of rather dull brown catfishes I would pay more money for that the kind of things we are discussing here. But I might be relatively unusual in that view!

Re: Fish for sale

Post by grokefish »

Well he did state quite clearly in the first post that they were 'L173/L400' so it wasn't like he was trying to pass them off as the more expensive fish.
Once the other dude had got in the original poster 'Looked bad' because I think the second guy was basically accusing him of trying to pass them off as L173 and as such worth more money, which clearly he wasn't he had as mentioned listed them as L173/400 and up for offers, not 'L173 £200 please and don't trip up on yer way out.'

However I do think that pictures should have been posted because of the lack of clarity, although I fail to see how one could not identify which fish it is seeing as this dude obviously isn't a beginner at fish keeping.

Anyway that is my opinion.

Edit: I got them the wrong way around.

Double edit:
How does the other guy know that they are NOT L173? There are no pictures.
Also to be honest my main problem with it all is the guy had no intention of buying them, so why is he posting in this topic?
It is a for sale topic not the What am I? or Whats mt catfish? ones.
If I was going to pay £200+ for individual fish, I would make sure MYSELF that they were what I wanted not take hearsay and conjecture and some random opinion of someone else, I believe most other people would too, otherwise they have no place buying £200+ fish or they are stoopid and have too much money.
Like the OP said it's cash on collection so the potential purchaser can turn up and decide for themselves what the fish are.

Third edit: Why does it not show that I have edited my post? This is a really useful feature because you are not relying on my honesty to put my 'Edits' in, I could potentially sell something to someone like a bunch of L400 as L173 and then go back and change my original post to 'L400 for sale'

Edit: test edit

Hype-ancistrus again, eh? ;-)

Well, it appears on the face of it a previous argument outside of Planet possibly around this fish. I don't know but JoePlec could answer that. There is also this thread. I am not really that interested in it cluttering up the forum.

However, you ask a really good question. For clarity, anyone is free to question anything for sale in an attempt to, hopefully with goodwill, improve things for the fish, the buyer and the seller. The recent example with Mats as of / comes to mind.

It appears to me that without a photo, without any provenance location, the tag L173/L400 is potentially disingenuous and certainly open to challenge because no picture provided. As to "come and see them", that's a good open offer, but won't precludes any challenges as has happened here.

Unsavoury as it might appear, I don't see anything against the rules here.

I certainly never meant to "bait" anyone. I just feel that placing a price tag of a L173 onto a fish that could be L400 is a bit wrong. If i am so wrong why was the price tag of the L400 not used instead? I dont want to cause any arguements whatsoever and will not post on this thread again.. I just think its been took way too far and that itself is ridiculous!

Bob i do apologise if you thought i was baiting, i certainly never wanted to do that or make you feel like i had.

Because that's what the OP wanted to sell them for, and they are free to do so. Anyway, where exactly does it say L173 is £200 - I didn't pay similar for mine. I've got some £200 cherry shrimp if anyone is interested! :-) Grokefish is right from the point of view that if you're daft enough to spend £200 on a fish after seeing it in person, and its not what you expected, then you can't really have reason to hold a grudge. So, I don't think price alone is a problem.

This post if going on and on because it's important to us on this site to monitor these things, try and get it right. Learn from threads like this one. For example, one thing we might suggest is mandating a photo.

Ah I see.

Edit: Jools I use another forum (not related to fish) in which the for sale section is a BIG part of that forum, they have very distinct rules regarding posting. I can't link to these rules as you have to be validated to see them, this is a very complicated process involving 5 validation votes from members, which gets you onto another list, which is then vetted by senior members. I can however Email you or post a copy here if you wish. Some of it may be applicable some may not.

Thanks, overall I'd rather either keep it simple or can it. However, it would do no harm at all to read these rules and see if some things might be employed here.
