The water in the river is muddy and therefore low Viz.
Out in the lake away from the river mouth the water can be very clear at times - depends on the time of year. Right now its raining pretty hard most days so the water Viz has gotten pretty low. Around October is the best time for clarity underwater.

To clarify, johnjohn has mentioned the river in the above images is the Lufubu River in Zambia.
