7th November 2010 - New Feature - Upload your catfish pics!

A new feature has been added to the "My Cats" pages to allow you to upload your best pic of your catfish. This is then shown on your species list summary page. This is part of a wider development, more soon!

To see this in action, click on my "My Cats" link to the right of this post and scroll down to Scobinancistrus sp. (L253).

Meantime, happy uploading!

Hi Jools

Am I able to download my images also?? If so, how might I do it, as I cannot see the "my Cats" on mine.

You will have to register your species in the Cat-eLog. So, say you have , you go to that species and click "Add to My cats" next to the name of the species.

Hi Mark,

You are able to upload your pictures (current limit one per species), but I would suggest, as one of the sites premier photographers, you would continue to submit them for inclusion in the catelog by the admins.

I have been thinking about a feature that allows pictures to me moved from personal upload into the catelog, but only by admins and that will have to wait for the current mountain of work to subside a bit!

As the use of personal uploads grows over time, there will be, undoubtedly a lot of photos from personal users that aren't correct. The pics in the catelog will be the "quality controlled" images for that species if you see what I mean?

In terms of the links to the right, an image appears in "my images" if it's a "quality controlled" one that has been submitted to the catelog and should be listed in "my cats" if it is an unvetted picture of your fish that you are keeping.

I will also look at a "report this image" and a "I don't think this image is correct" and a "rate this image" feature in due course. Similarly, a new feature to change the species you are keeping becuase you've now ID'ed it correctly is needed soon. This is where someone enters data for a species and, only at a later point in time, figures out it's not that species. being a great example.

If the name of a species changes, the site will continue to update the "my cats" data and will migrate over any uploaded pictures (note to self, this doesn't work yet for uploaded pics!).

Another excellent site feature :-bd
I hope it's just me but the image you suggest to look at in your pics of the Scobi is not showing in either IE7 or Firefox. in Firefox it just shows the text of the species name, in IE, it shows the same but with a red cross in the corner. Right clikc and Show image does nothing.
Maybe I should report this, but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing somehting obvious?

It's clearly broken, and I've sent Jools an e-mail with details.

Yes, I should have thought of that when testing it - good spot everyone. Basically I would have needed to log in as someone else and checked it out. This issue doesn't however affect the ability to upload and I've fixed it now anyway.

Cheers,

Jools

Thanks for the additional info on the new features Jools! I look forward to seeing it implemented at a future time. Keep up the good work!

I will definitely continue to send my images to Mats in the meantime.

Nice feature. I stumbled onto it 2 nights ago, but didn't realize it was new. Works great, but will have to wait until I get home to access the rest of my pics to upload.

Indeed, and you can go really nuts when I launch the breeding info upload. Not long now!

Just a question... On each specie there is "delete" and "stop keeping" I understand it like delete, it is gone, and stop keeping, it is still there, but I have no specimen any more?

There is quite some on my list that I have sold, and some are lost.. But it is a good way to c
keep track of what you have, and have kept, at least in my opinion.

Yes, the way I see it is that you use DELETE when you accidentally added a species to your "My Cats", and "stop keeping" when you have sold/given away/accidentally killed/etc the species.

That's correct and they are there mainly for historical reporting. If a species is deleted it is actually still on the database but is not accessible or used anywhere. If you mark something as stopped keeping, then all the data you have for it is still there, can still be edited, but most importantly will be used for future reports like "show me the average temperature this species is kept at".

Cheers,

Jools
