Do Corydoras sterbai and Corydoras sterbai Albino bred the same way


As I`m getting high deaths with my Albino and very few with my Regular sterbai??

They are the same species, but of course that doesn't mean that they are equally hardy as young fry. Albino fish is likely created from a small number of original albino fry, so they may be more inbred, so they may have other genetic problems.

I have no experience with breeding albino C. sterbai, so my above answer is just speculation, not based on experience.

if you breed albino x albino it's not a surprise to have many deaths

albinism is a recessive treat and if you linebreed it a long list of gene-based faults "hitch along".
the best way to breed albino's (any albino's, bristlenoses as well) is to crossbreed them with the regular form and then sell the albino's that pop up in the second generation.

it's Mendel, pure and simple
starters: albino x wildcolor form

generation 1: will all look like wildform, but these guys are heterogyzotes. they carry the albino gene, but don't show it.

generation 2: 3/4 will look like wildform and 2/3rd of that batch are heterozygotes;
about 1/4 is albino's again, but probably far less disease riddled orprone to dying than linebred albino's.
it takes motre time and effort, but you can build yourself a fairly tough strain of albino's.
just don't linebreed em, or at least not for generation after generation.

That is certainly what Alex is suggesting. I'm not entirely sure, because crossing back the young will almost certainly bring back all the genes they originally had, as (in the albino form) all the genes of both parents are again present in the off-spring. Unless I've misunderstood something important.

you cannot linebreed albino's, period

the F2 albino'scan be used as breeding stock, but only if you keep bringing in wildforms to crossbreed in that strain.

they are also very suitable for the trade, because they will be healthy and strong and you want happy customers ;)

and you should use wildforms of a different source as well; maybe your own batch is closely related? then exchange em with someone else's Sterbai's.

dittothe albino's; for example, exchange all your male albino's for a male batch of another breeder.


and keep tabs on the whole thing; a breeding program, so you know who's spawning with who and so on.
easily done on the PC with excel or even wordpad.
keep making notes!

it's really the same as breeding horses, cats or dogs
you don't want bro and sis to mate if you can avoid it; and "mutts" (in this case albino x wildform) make the toughest animals.

luckily corydoras sterbai matures a bit faster than a horse

The point of wild-caught is that they are (most likely) not closely related to the parents of your fish, so the genetics is quite different. It's the same problem as inbreeding in any other small communities: There aren't enough different genetic material to go around, so the genes gets "recycled" within the same close relations, and eventually all manner of genetic defects turn up - such as albinism!

mind that I use the word "wildform" to describe a sterbai with the natural looks but it can be captive breds

If i meant fish that were imported from South america, I'd use wildcaught
wich is not the same
