I hit on this fish today 4-5inch i am waiting on a lead for my camera to take actual pics. But im 99% sure its this.



I bought it because its a fine plec, nice belly and very friendly.

I need to know more about its diet and if anyone else has any? I need to sex it also.

Also is it pretty rare? because no-one has any details in a brief search online

HaHa didnt even know where i posted it sorry... all my fish are always for sale i change my mind like the wind.. do you know anything about these fish? i cant find any details online.. no max size.. no diet requirements nothing..

Ok, so I've moved this to the Loricariidae section for now. If at a later stage you want to sell it, I suggest you post another post in the relevant section.

As to size of L389, I don't _KNOW_, but guessing based on the genus, I'd say it probably grows "medium large", something like 25-30.

Diet, probably mainly vegetarian.

Well, there is no other keeper in the Planet Catfish registered keepers list - not even you! [but may be best to hang fire until you've found that wire for the camera and got a proper ID].

I had a look at a spreadsheet that Ingo Seidel sent me, and it indicates "25-35cm" as size and "mainly vegetable food". I also filled in the data sheet with this information, along with the river it comes from.

Sounds good. the picture is exactly the same as the fish, but ill upload pics in a day or so as ive ordered a new lead and you can see for yourself. At the moment all i have is pics on me phone

Sure. It's just a bit of an unusual fish, and it's from an area that isn't exactly common in exports. It probably prefers slightly cooler temperature (and perhaps a bit more variation up/down in temp) than your average. Aside from Megalechis thoracata, (which is widespread in most of South America) the fish listed have less than six keepers, most of them have NO keepers registered.

I'm not saying it ISN'T L389, just that it's rather an unusual find. Did the shop have lots of other unusual species? [Assuming you can tell...]

I bought it from a maidenhead aquatics. obviously they just bought a box of l numbers, other than that i have no clue. as to price i wouldnt have a clue of what its worth, they had some other l numbers in the tank i could not id. very similar to L066 but obviously not.

I'd also be very surprised.

When you take photos, make sure you get good stocks of the mouth and teeth as well.

That is a great find... these 2 plecs look very similar.. i cant say either way.. its definately more green... photos are definately required. either way i wont be bothered as long as i feed it the right stuff.

Also ive been reading about the L265 since you suggested and it appears to have redish fins and has been nicknamed "red fin" but i wouldnt say mine had red fins at all.. any suggestion on how is best to take these pictures with regards to lighting and angles

Ideally, we want pictures from above (dorsal view) and the side (lateral view), as well as a nice clear shot of the mouth - the shape of the mouth and the teeth are an important factor in identifying many plecos.

I know how hard it can be to take this sort of photos, so don't be disappointed if your first, second or fifth try isn't quite as good as these - do your best. It helps to have a small tank to take photos in - for dorsal view, it's also entirely possible to use a plastic tub of light colouration - ice-cream container or some such.

I will get good shots just need to get the lead sorted. still waiting on it. cant think of another way to get a pic onto laptop.

Obviously depends on the phone: blue-tooth or taking the memory card out of the phone could work. But it assumes that either your laptop is blue-tooth capable, or that your memory (media) in the phone is removable and you have a suitable reader on the laptop. Most simpler phones don't have removable media.

it does have micro sd 8gb but the laptop doesnt take micro cards just standard sd. id need the adaptor to make micro into full size and guess what.. ive lost that too haha.. im now 50/50 as to which fish it is out them 2.. not bad for starting out at 99% sure haha

Peckoltia for sure. Don't think it's L265.

But we'd need better picture to identify.
Also with good pictures peckoltias like these are hard to identify without info where it got cought.

A simple lateral shot of the fish unstressed in the tank would be good. Preferably with fins up.

this fish is green tho.. they look brown, im stuck.. ill get a couple more today

I'd say from the photos we have so far, or are better matches than P. vittata.

some more.. all pics taken thru the glass are not good quality at all.. so i had to take him out again..

out of those suggestions id say L009 because the thick of the tail doesnt have them stripes that the first one does

I would help quite a bit of you could get it to settle in [no getting it out of the water], and take a picture where it's in the tank.
