here again asking for your help. This Panaque comes from Tarapoto- Peru.
Help me to identificate, please dont tell me this is Pleco PAPA because it is not.

This looks like a Papa Panaque to me. I am also curious as to why you don't think it is.

Yes, I think Racoll is trying to make the point of using scientific names when one is available - something I agree with in principle, yet sometimes can't be bothered to write the long name out when you can just write

L090

which is a whole 12 characters shorter if you include the space in the middle.

I do prefer the scientific names though, but the clog tags on the L number are so handy.

at this point i would say there are at least 3 or 4 differents kinds of PAPA Panaque.
I will post another picture later and i want to see what you will say (I meant how you will clasificate that fish).

i took it the last year and it that fish came from Iquitos, it is Papa from Iquitos, if you try to compare it is different to the one of this post.... now we have 2 kinds...wait my next picture later

Ok, so the fish pictured above is in a dark tank, where as the other one is a light tank, so the fish's colors will be different. I think this one's pattern might be a little different so its trying to be sold as something else to get a larger payment (that is just my opinion, because between the two images, there are still a TON of similarities.)

I have to agree with everyone else.
You should expect minor variations over their range and depending on the fishes age. And the setting the fish is in when photographed and how stressed it may be due to being placed in the photo tank can make them look a little different. Those kinds of differences are insufficient to warrant a different name.

I have Nathan Lujan's dissertation and it says this about

Panaque bathyphilus

".... Panaque bathyphilus, new species, are described from the main channel of the upper (Marañon) and middle (Solimões) Amazon River respectively. Both species are diagnosed by having nearly white bodies and fins, long filamentous extensions of both simple caudal-fin rays, small eyes, absence of an iris operculum and unique combinations of morphometrics."

Can anyone explain the "nearly white bodies" observation? I think I've read that they colour up when brought to the surface.

But anyway, there is a lot of variation within Panaque bathyphilus. All these pics should be P. bathyphilus.

I have asked Nathan Lujan to comment on this thread. Can't guarantee if/when we get a reply, but he's usually pretty good at replying if he's not off in some remote part of South America or such catching new specimens for research.

Not sure we are comparing "like with like" in all the photos matthewfaulkner kindly posted, as I expect there will be variation in colour pattern during ontogeny.

Sadly I don't have the description so can't confirm, but I can't see the value in regarding these as anything other than minor variations of P. bathyphilus.

That said, as always, this doesn't mean one should mix fish with different phenotypes when trying to breed them!

I took these at a shop in the UK, they were imported and on sale as 'L90 Papa Panaque'. Are they? They are patternless and instead of the white or orange colour in the caudal fin they are black.
