Hi everyone,

I came across two of these fish at a local fish store and bought them as mystery plecos. As of right now my best guess is to be an L-080. I just wanted to be sure because I have two males and would one day like to find them some females if possible. Also I would liek to enter them in my clubs bowl show next month. Here are my best pics I have. Thanks

yea I see there a lot of very similair fish. I just was hoping someone had something similar and could help I.D. because I would rather not misidentify it. the one thing that the person I bought it off said though.Is that it had a common name like a chocolate zebra or something of that nature. Also do you think its pattern will break up more as it becomes older? And another thing is that its housed with my l-204 and doesnt touch the pieces of drift wood like my l-204 does. thanks for the info though.

has the common name 'Chocolate Zebra Pleco'.

I agree. It's definitely one of the small Panaque species - it is too "chunky" to be a Hypancistrus.

I'm afraid it'll be difficult to match it to a specific species without knowing where it came from.

If it's a then it needs to go on a diet - the first picture in particular shows the typical "looks like is swallowed a golf-ball" shape of Panaque. I may be wrong.

Mats I agree but since the pic is taken out the water, I wouldn't be so sure, especially with the picture in the water that could also show a Peckoltia...

But for sure it is either one of this 2!!

Could it be Peckoltia Vitata? Often mistaken for Panaqua Maccus it says in the cat-e-log.....
Don't think the head shape quite fits Panaque.

They are often mistaken because there are confusing mixups of one showing the other for picture [Baensh Aquarium Atlas shows a picture of P. maccus with a caption of P. vittata - but I think I've seen it the other way around too].

Body shape, in my opinion is wrong for any Peckoltia.
