No matter who is selling them, or what the price is, these fish have in some way or another been illegally transported out of Brazil unless the seller is lying about them being wild-caught.

Captive bred fish are available.

There is one on New Zealand auction site Trademe from a reputable ornamental fish importer which was listed at NZ$1 reserve, as of this post bidding has risen to NZD$605 (approx USD$425) not a bad deal as they are retailing them for NZD$890 (approx USD$623). They are increbibly rare here, one sold approx a year ago on Trademe for around NZ$800 for a mature male. They are probably being bred here (I hope they are) but due to the value of them the lucky few who have them keep it very quiet.

Here is a link to the auction for those interested...

On a different topic can anyone confirm for me the status of L270 out of Brasil I noticed the other day thay they are no longer on the 'allowed list' for import to NZ (strangely L046, and L260 are) am wondering if they are on the allowed list fopr export frpom Brasil if not then the chances of me getting a female for my 3 males are looking slim :(

I'm pretty sure all L-number Hypancistrus are illegal to export from Brazil. And I'm also pretty sure the NZ import list would apply for captive bred fish as well as illegally/legally captured wild fish, so I expect it's just someone messing with the list for some unknown reason.
