I am pretty sure my corys are Rabauti, but I just wanted some confirmation that they are not Zygatus
Thanks

I've attached a smaller version of the image, so we can see the WHOLE fish at once.
Most people do not have a 3000 pixel wide screen...

And I'd say your fish are indeed C. rabauti, at least if I understand ID sections in the Cat-eLog rightly.

I think all the fish on the rabauti page from the albino onwards are zygatus.

There are a couple of very simple keys to check out to separate the two species.
C. zygatus grows to around 75 mm SL adult female.
1. The dorasl scute directly below the dorsal sspine has a clear edge to it, giving the appearance of a break in the band.
2. The diagonal band has a metallic sheen to it.
3. The diagonal band remains only on the dorsal scutes and ends at he caudal peduncle.
C. rabauti grows to around 55 mm SL adult female
1. The diagonal band almost always has a matt finish, no metallic sheen.
2. The diagonal band crosses the caudal peduncle and fades into the lower caudal lobe.
3. There is often a less distinct, tapering dark band below the main band.
4. The orange head patch is larger and more intense.

Well now I know that they are I wouldn't mind attempting to breed them...I have a 10gal tank all set up and ready cycled and have 4 Rabauti. I know you should have 6 but thats all I have, I haven't even sexed them yet, so fingers crossed still...
I read they seem to lay eggs near the top in faster current, should I keep the current movement lower while I condition them and then turn it up?
I dont remember coming across much info on breeding these specific corys on this site, if anyone could provide a little more info that would be great!

I spawned mine a few times and raised quite a few fry.
You're right that they lay their eggs in moving water and near to the surface. Some of the eggs I found were actually out of the water. I think you might need a bigger tank as they like to rush around the place. Females are bigger and fatter than males.
Fed the usual stuff including live worms. Spawned a couple of days after a big water change.

Alright thanks,
So Other than a water change (like 50%?) it wasn't too difficult to spawn these cory cats?

I'd say this species is one of the more difficult to spawn. I kept a group of large adults for many years and they spawned only a few times. You will need to be patient. It's worth it though; the fry are beautiful.

If Hans-Georg Evers and Ian Fuller is to be believed, then no, the "best" thing is sand. In nature, corys are always found over a sand substrate [of course, there are exceptions, but I'll completely ignore those].
should I have any rocks or cover for them?
Never heard anyone say it's a bad thing, and many people say it's a good thing. Plants, wood or rock "caves" are always appreciated by corys.

I'd say this species is one of the more difficult to spawn.
Really? This is one of the two species i ever got round to breeding. I believe the long nose species are the ones generally considered more difficult & i certainly didn't encounter any great difficulties. The fry/young are truly the most stunning of any cory species IMHO.
I would say sand is an absolute must to make the fish feel secure.

alright sand it is...will pool filter sand work?
so I know this could be a long process, what should be a starting point for conditioning? regular water changes of 25% per week for say a month with good quality foods and then a large 50% water change with perhaps some cooler rain water? and then keep trying something similar things if the first attempt doesn't work?
ps. now that i know the fry are going to be so cool looking I am so excited, waiting is going to suck!

yes I have read the article, Thank you
I was just looking for some more species specific info on my Rabauti cory cats...such as a starting length of time for conditioning or any other little tips or tricks others have picked up over the years.
Thanks again this is an awesome reference site
